A Message from the President

Greetings TODOS Community,

Today, I’m honored to pen my first post for our electronic newsletter as I prepare to meet with an amazing set of board members at our annual retreat. I’m humbled to be part of a collective who understands that by prioritizing equity and high quality mathematics instruction for Latine students, we, in effect, do so for all students. The varied and intersectional identities represented by our board members help us advocate for those who’ve traditionally not been considered. Many of us have experienced this persistent exclusion personally.

Twenty years ago, TODOS was established through an insistence to exist. Through the years, we have persisted in laying out a vision of a world all students deserve - one where marginalized students are not an afterthought but central in the design of instruction. We have audaciously taken the lead in providing actionable steps in achieving this vision through our position statements and professional development resources, including our first book. And still, there is much more work to be done.

TODOS is entering a phase of transformative change and growth. We will continue in our mission of advocacy, even in times such as these, as we build internal and external capacity. We invite you to not only observe our evolution, but to join us in our efforts. We can - we must - do this in community. The time is now. Are you ready?

TODOS Live! What We Do When Fairness Fails Us

May 30, 2024, at 4 PM Pacific

Presenters: Toya Frank, Zandra de Araujo, and Maria del Rosario Zavala

During this session, the authors of the Powerful Mathematicians Who Changed the World Book high school series will share about the development of the first book in the series, What We Do When Fairness Fails Us. They will also offer suggestions for using the text and its supporting materials, and the community will have an opportunity for questions and reflection on the book. ---Toya Jones Frank is a mathematics educator who works as an Associate Professor at George Mason University and staff at the National Science Foundation. Her research focuses on how racialized experiences influence teaching and learning. She is a former high school mathematics teacher and has served in several roles, including, teacher educator and consultant, with numerous stakeholders at the local, state, and national levels.Zandra de Araujo serves as the mathematics principal at the Lastinger Center for Learning. Her research examines teachers’ instruction in algebra with students who are primarily English learners. Zandra began her career as a high school math teacher, she has served as a board member of prominent professiona. As a leader in higher education, she has served organizations including TODOS: Mathematics for All, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Maria del Rosario Zavala (she/ella) is an Associate Professor of Elementary Education at San Francisco State University, and the daughter of Peruvian immigrants. Her career in education began over twenty years ago as an undergraduate Mathematics major and has led her in and out of K-12 classrooms, teacher education, and now into the literary world of realistic fiction in pursuit of helping everyone understand their potential as mathematical people.

TODOS Blog on Environmental Issues

The TODOS Blog Committee is pleased to share the second installment of our blog series, ¡Alerta, Wildfires! Our Relationship and Responsibility, about environmental issues is out just in time for Earth Day!

This piece explores the dangerous wildfires that are becoming more common in some areas, and specifically examines our relationship with natural spaces and responsibility for wildfire issues. In addition to providing information for advocacy, the blog also shares two mathematical investigations for educators to use with students.

2023 Iris M. Carl Awardees Announcement

The 2023 Iris M. Carl Equity and Leadership Awardee is Harold Asturias. “Harold is also one of the leading experts in the Bay Area and nationally on teaching mathematics to English learners” cited one nominee. Another nominee indicated that “he is a connector who recognizes the needs of a program and the strengths of his ever-expanding group of colleagues and then matches them together to expand on and improve their collective work.” Congratulations, Harold!

The 2023 Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching Awardee Erin Sylves. Erin Sylves received the TODOS Iris M. Carl Equity in Teaching Award. One nominator said, “She uses her role to build the capacity of school leaders and teachers to create the best learning environment possible for all students; breaking down silos and helping schools redesign systems to create equitable learning outcomes.” Another said “She did and continues to do what many find uncomfortable: confront deficit thinking in many contexts and with many educators ….” Congratulations, Erin!
